Remarks by the President at US Naval Academy Commencement
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press SecretaryFor Immediate Release
May 22, 2009
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
AT THE UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY COMMENCEMENT
United States Naval Academy
Annapolis, Maryland
10:18 A.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you very much. Please, be seated. Governor O'Malley, thank you for your generous introduction and for your leadership here in Maryland. Vice Admiral Fowler and faculty, distinguished guests, parents, family and friends, the Brigade of Midshipmen -- (applause) -- and most importantly, the graduates of the Class of 2009. (Applause.) Seven hundred and fifty-six Navy and, I am told, the largest number of Marines in Naval Academy history. (Applause.)
Now, I know it's customary at graduation for guests to bring a gift. And I have. All midshipmen on restriction for minor conduct offenses are hereby officially absolved. (Applause.) I did say "minor." (Laughter.)
Midshipmen, I'm told that the extra ribbon on your chest is for the honor you earned, for only the second time in the storied history of the Naval Academy -- the Navy's Meritorious Unit Commendation Award. So I've consulted with Admiral Fowler, and I can make this announcement: For all you midshipmen returning next fall, I hereby grant you something extra -- an extra weekend. (Applause.) I should stop now. (Laughter.)
I am extraordinarily honored to be with you today. Because of all the privileges of serving as President, I have no greater honor than serving as your Commander-in-Chief. Read more...

The Hudson River Plane Crash: Photos and Thoughts

Unless you were asleep under a rock yesterday, you know all about U.S. Airways flight 1549 that had a surprise crash landing into the Hudson River. This story is remarkable for a number of reasons:
1. The cause - a flock of geese got sucked into the jet engines. Yes, that's terribly sad for the geese, but also terribly scary to think how easily things like this could happen!
2. The incredibly smooth landing. Thanks to Captain Chelsey Sullenberger, who managed to keep the plane level, the water landing was nowhere near the disaster most of us thought of when we heard about the crash.
3. Everyone lived!!! Although we can be sure the water was below freezing, all 154 passengers made their way out of the plane and back to land safely. This story does have a happy ending (except for the geese, who we are very sad to see go.)

National Debt Graph: Bush Sets 50-Year Record

Double Whammy: 50-Year Record on Sept. 22. $10 Trillion on Sept. 30, 2008
The gross national debt compared to GDP (how rich we are) reached its lowest level since 1931 as Reagan took office in 1981. It skyrocketed for 12 years through Bush senior. Clinton reversed it at a peak of 67%. Bush junior crossed that line on Sept. 22 and hit 69% on Sept 30. That's the highest it's been since 1955. (sources)
Bush did three things to skyrocket the debt from $5.7 trillion to $10 trillion:
2. He invaded Iraq instead of winning in Afghan-Pakistan (another $600 B).
3. He deregulated Wall Street speculators. That bailout has now "invested" $1T
